EDITOR'S NOTES. --Ga. L. 1993, p. 1744, § 1, effective July 1, 1993, repealed the Code sections formerly codified as this chapter and enacted the current chapter. The former chapter consisted of §§ 33-15-1 through 33-15-11.1, §§ 33-15-12 through 33-15-39 (Article 1) and §§ 33-15-50 through 33-15-56 (Article 2) and was based on Ga. L. 1960, p. 289, § 1; Ga. L. 1976, p. 983, §§ 1, 2; Ga. L. 1979, p. 786, § 2; Ga. L. 1981, Ex. Sess., p. 8; Ga. L. 1982, p. 3, § 33; Ga. L. 1984, p. 22, § 33; Ga. L. 1985, p. 1399, §§ 6, 7; Ga. L. 1988, p. 1537, §§ 1, 2; Ga. Ga. L. 1993, p. 1744, § 2, not codified by the General Assembly, provided: "This Act shall become effective July 1, 1993, and shall apply on and after such date for all new or newly admitted societies. For societies admitted prior to July 1, 1993, this Act shall apply on and after January 1, 1994."
JUDICIAL DECISIONS
ILLEGALLY EXPELLED MEMBER MAY RECOVER ASSESSMENTS. --A member of a fraternal benefit order, association, or society may recover all assessments paid in, upon being illegally expelled therefrom. Brothers & Sisters of Charity v. Renfroe, 57 Ga. App. 646, 196 S.E. 135 (1938).
OPINIONS OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL
MUNICIPALITY MAY IMPOSE OCCUPATION TAX ON FRATERNAL BENEFIT SOCIETIES. --This title does not prohibit the imposition of a reasonable occupation tax on fraternal benefit societies actually doing business in a municipality. 1969 Op. Att'y Gen. No. 69-187.
